It's now possible to chat on and on in Direct Messages since they're no longer limited to 140 characters, this change follows after Twitter allowed group DMs and allowed users to receive DMs from anyone even if they didn't follow them.
Tweets are largely meant for the public while Direct Messages are private between one or more recipients, they're more focused towards private conversations and that's one of the reasons why Twitter is removing the limit to make private conversations on its microblogging network more powerful and fun. Twitter reiterates that this changes nothing for tweets, they'll continue to be capped at 140 characters.
The company is rolling out this change today across its Android and iOS apps as well as on Twitter for Mac, TweetDeck and on twitter.com. It will be rolled out worldwide over the coming weeks. Users should keep in mind that sending and receiving DMs using SMS will still be limited to 140 characters.
